Movies: The Old Guard (Netflix – 15), Annihilation (Netflix 15), Next Gen (Netflix) & IO (Netflix – 12)

The Old Guard (Netflix – 15) – what’s it about? A group of immortals try to do good in the world but a corporation wants their ability.

I thought I’d give this one a go as it come up in my recommended watch list and it was a pretty good action movie. The story is ok and well it’s kind of what you expect but it’s a good leave your brain at the door movie. It’s violent with guns and fights but that’s what you get from an action type of film, it’s all done really well too. It’s one of those after watching it I really wanted to cosplay from it so in my book that shows it’s a good film lol. Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by this one, if you like a good bit of a mindless movie then this is worth a look.

Rating: ****

Annihilation (Netflix 15) – what’s it about? There’s this shimmer that appears and soldiers and scientists try to figure out what it is, no one goes in and comes out alive…until now.

I watched this and now am writing this a couple of days later and to tell you the truth I completely forgot I watched this and what this is about, so that probably tells you how memorable an impact this one had. Don’t get me wrong it was ok but just nothing special really, the effects were good, and the story was ok but I just found it very slow and drawn out. It just had nothing special in my book, I’ve given it two stars as I think three is being a bit generous.

Next Gen (Netflix) – what’s it about? An animated story about an angst ridden teenage girl who befriends a robot and they cause mischief together.

I wanted something easy to watch so put this one on, and well I’d just read the small synopsis on Netflix and that was about it. I wasn’t expecting this to be so much about an angry teen, but that said it was good. It tackled a few subjects like loss, bullying and friendship really, as well as you know the evil corporate overlord that wants to destroy the world…so your typical kids film really lol. Yep I would say this is a good watch, it passed the time and was enjoyable, don’t get me wrong this doesn’t have anything on the likes of Big Hero 6, but yeah still something to watch.

Rating: ***

IO (Netflix – 12) – what’s it about? Earth is pretty much dead and the last flight out of here is due to depart, can these two people make it in time to get off the planet.

Another film about the end of the world, you’d kind of think that I’ve seen every one of these things by now. I really don’t know why I watch them…maybe it’s to be prepared, who knows. Anyway this one focuses on a young scientist and a visitor who comes looking for her father, it’s very much about survival and the fate of the world stuff. But the humans have all given up on earth so are sending one last shuttle. I thought this would be more about the journey for them to get to the shuttle, but it’s not, it’s just lots of waiting and stuff. The story is ok for this one, but it is not an amazing film, this could maybe make it to three stars but I'm not sure if that's being generous.
