Movies: Rise of the Guardians (DVD – PG), Conan the Barbarian (2011) (DVD – 15) & Taken (DVD – 15)

Rise of the Guardians (DVD – PG) – what’s it about? The Boogieman wants to take over the world and the Guardians must protect all that is good.

So this is a nice little cartoon where the Guardians must save the day against a baddie, so nothing new on the plot of a film there really. It’s a nice little story and the characters are all pretty cool and fun in their own ways, I’m still not sure why Santa has swords but it’s awesome. Yeah I really did like this one filled with magic and belief, it is just generally a good film, which I think people of all ages would love, it’s not overly kiddy and is generally well done I think. It’s worth a watch if you’d like to watch a nice easy going film.

Conan the Barbarian (2011) (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? Conan travels the land in search of the person that killed his father to get revenge.

I thought I’d give this one a re-watch as I hadn’t seen it for a bit, and well I kind of forgot how brutal this was, yeah it’s a 15 but still so it’s harsh at times. Yeah the plot is a little meh but its more about the action and survival than too much story, which gets by to make it a good film, but it’s definitely one you watch with leaving your brain at the door. Yep it’s got a good lot of violence and some is really like ouch funny…and I think quite a few people are happy to watch Jason Mamoa kick some baddies butts on screen. Yep if you want to watch a stack of violence with not too much thinking involved then check this out.

Taken (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? After his daughter is kidnapped, Mills heads to Paris to try to find her.

I hadn’t seen this for a long while and I picked it up before all the shops closed, I remembered it was pretty damn good so yeah what the hell. Yeah this is a good thriller, it’s filled with a nice chunk lot of action as the retired military father goes on a mission to find his daughter, and kill all the baddies along the way with some brutal violence. Yeah they really fucked up kidnapping the wrong girl lol. I can’t really say any more without giving it away, but yeah it’s still brilliant to watch even on the second time around. If you haven’t seen it and you want to just watch a really great film then this is worth checking out.

Movies: Prince of Egypt (DVD – U), Kung Fu Panda 2 (DVD – PG), Olympus Has Fallen (DVD – 15), Hunter Killer (DVD – 15) & Shark Tale (DVD – U)

Prince of Egypt (DVD – U) – what’s it about? A young Moses finds out he’s not really Prince and sets out to save his people.

So I haven’t seen this in a very long time and basically forgot this was actually a religious movie when I put it on, it’s still good though and an enjoyable little watch. It’s filled with some plot and some good humour, the characters are made to be pretty fun, yeah it’s quite light-hearted even though it really tackles some horrendous things – but this will probably pass over the little ones heads. Yep it’s worth a watch if you like animated stuff and want to watch something enjoyable to pass the time.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (DVD – PG) – what’s it about? Po and the gang must battle against Lord Shen who wishes to use deadly weapons to take over the land.

So when these films first come out I wasn’t interested at all in them and thought they’d be too silly. I found the first one cheap a long while back and thought what the hell it can’t be that bad and well I ended up thinking it was awesome. So I found this recently and thought I’d grab it, and it doesn’t disappoint, it’s filled with a great cast again and the story is good and it is really funny in parts. It’s got it all really and is totally worth a watch/re-watch, as all the family will love it!

Rating: ****

Olympus Has Fallen (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? There is a terrorist attack on the White House and Mike a Secret Service Agent must save the day.

I haven’t seen this one in a while so thought I would give it a re-watch, it’s your typical “omg we’re under attack, we’ve got to save the President” movie. So expect lots of action, guns and explosions, with a little bit of plot to link it all together. Yep this is your good old action flick where you can munch on your popcorn and leave your brain at the door. It’s worth a look if you like this type of film as you’ll really enjoy it, if you are not an action fan film then maybe give this a break.

Rating: ****

Hunter Killer (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? A Russian and an American submarine are shot down in the Arctic, and an American submarine is sent into investigate.

So this one is another action film, so you can expect the usual with this one, but it is filled with a good conspiracy plot this time which is good. It also has a lot of action, with some good old violence and some guns, yep it also has a few good explosions which are thrown in for good measure too. Yep if you love a good “the military save the day” movie or are into action films then this one will be right up your street, if you are not so much then you might be a little disappointed but yep in my book it’s a good watch.

Rating: ****

Shark Tale (DVD – U) – what’s it about? Oscar has big dreams and ends up becoming a celebrity, but it’s not all plain sailing for this little fish.

This one is another bit of family fun, it’s another cartoon based under the sea and is about the lives of fishes and one fish in particular, who wants to make something of himself and get himself out of being a whale washer. It’s filled with some good actors which is always entertaining, it’s got a nice little story and also some good parts that’ll make you and your little ones giggle. I have to admit I did find the fishes faces quite creepy, it’s no way as creepy as cats but you know they are a little weird. Yep in all this is good family film that the young ones will love.
