Movies: The Call of The Wild (PG), Greed (15), Wall-e (DVD - U) & Underworld: Blood Wars (DVD - 15)

The Call of The Wild (PG) - what's it about? A dog called Buck and his adventures through life.

Ok so I went to this movie armed with two packs of tissues, because you know it's a film about a dog and you know how those usually end up. This was a really good story, and from the view of the dog, which had a nice voice over way of telling the story for the plot - so that was good as there's no talking animals in this one! I don't really want to say too much to give it away, but it is very much a story driven film with a few bits that'll make you laugh but also some that are quite sad where you may possibly shed a tear. Yeah if you like a good story about animals then this is worth looking into.

Greed (15) - what's it about? Super rich high street store owner wants to celebrate his birthday in style.

I wasn't too fussed to see this but a friend wanted to so I thought I would go along. I thought I would just get pissed off by it, and I did, this is basically a film about a complete and utter rich twat. Oh I hate people like that, completely rip off others and screw people over for their own personal gain. Yeah it is an ok film, but it was dull, not much happens except the drama and how bad people are treated. It has a few moments that were a little funny but its not overly much, the actors/actresses done really well playing the characters as by the end you get a real dislike for them!

Wall-e (DVD - U) - what's it about? A little robot that's left to clean up earth after humans have turned it into a dump.

So this film in itself I always find really sad, because this is how I see the earth going, humans are just destroying it and yeah its not good so I can see a bit of reality in it which makes me feel meh. That said it is a cute film, as there isn't too much talking in it, it would definitely appeal to the real young kids as there won't be that language barrier, but it also makes it a nice easy watch for all ages. Yeah, it's just overall a nice little story. Its worth a watch if you like Pixar stuff and haven't seen it before or seen it in a while.

Underworld: Blood Wars (DVD - 15) - what's it about? Selene's story continues as she tries to stop the Lycans getting to her daughter.

So this is again a continuation of the Underworld storyline, now I have to make it clear that I am a big fan of these movies. I really like the universe they have created so when they release a new one, I get really excited. I saw this when it was out in the cinema and thought I'd give it a re-watch. Yes, its a good continuation to the story, its filled with more of the same action and storyline about the Vampires vs Lycans so some might find it a little samey. If you are an Underworld fan or are total vampire nerd then this is worth a watch, if not then you may not enjoy it as much.

Movies: Emma (2020) (U), Sonic The Hedgehog (PG) & X-Men: Apocalypse (DVD -12)

Emma (2020) (U) - what's it about? A young lady who is toiling with love.

I was a little bored so I thought I'd go and see this one, just for something to watch, and I have to say now that I am not a romcom fan but on occasion they can be good and funny. That said I found this movie pretty dull, I didn't really find it too amusing, the romance was all so predictable and not much really happened...the only plus is it's not mind-numbingly long. It basically was as I thought it would be - something to pass the time, and that was about it. Yeah if you are a Jane Austen fan or you are really into period romance films then this will probably be right up your street, if you are not then probably steer well clear of this one.

Sonic The Hedgehog (PG) - what's it about? Sonic must survive against Dr Robotnik.

I thought I'd give this a go after all the drama and them changing Sonics character design. I have to say he looks so much more like the Sonic we know and love from the games rather than the abomination they created at first which was like the Cats remake - way too human *shudders*. Anyway, yeah this was pretty good, it gave me some good lol moments, its silly but that's what makes it so amusing. I think kids will love this but as an old school Sonic fan I also found it pretty good too. Yeah if you want something that's a good light-hearted film - that you can also distract your little ones with then this is probably worth checking out.

X-Men: Apocalypse (DVD -12) - what's it about? The X-Men must stop Apocalypse.

So this is a bit of a reboot to the franchise with the younger X-Men, rather than the ones from the first films - the only returning actor is Wolverine. It's set in the alternative timeline which takes place after the changes made in the previous movie - that said you don't need to have seen it or all the X-Men films to get this as this is a fresh version of the storyline. If you haven't seen them you just won't know the differences between the two timelines. I wouldn't say this is the best film, but it does have its moments and the X-Men feel to it. Plus, you know it does have Nightcrawler in it so it's totally up there in my book :D yeah if you are a X-Men movie fan then check this one out.

Movies: Birds of Prey (15), Underwater (15), Jay & Silent Bob: Reboot (DVD - 15) & Gravity (DVD - 12)

Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (15) - what's it about? After Harley and the Joker split up, Harley tries to find her way in the world and survive against the countless enemies she's made.

So as you probably know DC movies can be a bit hit and miss, and after everyone loved Harley in Suicide Squad they've been anticipating this film since then. The adverts made this look like it could be ok, so of course I went to see it. It was definitely one of the better DC movies out there, it had its moments - there were some good fight scenes and amusing moments, as well as a bit of story. I did like that they brought in some of the other characters to the movie too, so that was another tick in the box. I have to admit I'm not much of a Harley fan, but this did good in my book.

Underwater (15) - what's it about? A team are drilling at the bottom of the ocean, their rig is destroyed, and they must survive what lurks at the depths and find a way to the surface.

As a movie this isn't very original, I'm pretty sure I've seen this all before, but I just can't put my finger on from what movies, that said though it was still good. I would probably class it as a bit of a survival horror, it kicks off straight away and keeps the pace up throughout, its definitely the perfect length - it's not too long to be dull, which makes a nice change! This isn't though just about stuff going wrong with the drilling station, it does include some sea monsters so if you want it to be a believable film then its probably not for you.

Jay & Silent Bob: Reboot (DVD - 15) - what's it about? a reboot of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, where the terrible twosome must return to Hollywood and stop the reboot movie from being make.

I'd been waiting for this to come out in the cinema but sadly it wasn't shown, it was straight to DVD and that was ok because at least it was released! I'm not sure how the actors/characters haven't really aged that much - they didn't look much older than they did in the old movies! This had its moments but as it was a reboot it was mainly all done before but there were some good bits to it that gave me a giggle here and there. It did make me laugh with them going to comic con where I'm a congoer so I found that was really amusing, if you are not from that world though it may not be that funny. Yeah, it's a good watch that gave me a few giggles, I'd say its one to watch if you are a fan of the View Askew universe or more for the nostalgia value.

Gravity (DVD - 12) - what's it about? When their ship is destroyed by debris in space a couple of astronauts must survive and find a way to return to earth.

I saw this in the cinema and thought I would pick it up as I remember it was a good film, its not sci-fi so don't get your hopes up on that front. It's a believable space film about stuff going wrong, with the current limitation's astronauts face. I'd say even though I'd already seen this, as its been a while it was again and intense watch, and the suspense was still good. I'm pretty sure I said this before - as this film really only has one/two actors really in it, it's done so well. Yep if you like a good bit of outer space and some good acting and you haven't seen this then totally have a look.

Movies: The Rhythm Section (18), Dolittle (PG), Transformers: Age of Extinction (DVD - 12) & Riddick (DVD - 15)

The Rhythm Section (18) - what's it about? After her family are killed on a plane, Blake goes on a quest to get revenge.

I wasn't sure what this would be like as I hadn't seen the adverts and just saw the synopsis, but I thought I'd give it a go. It was actually pretty good, it was a lot grittier than I thought it would be. It was a little slow in parts where she was training but it gave a good insight into what made her and gave her the strength to achieve what she wanted to. It also has some really ouch scenes so be prepared for that lol. Yeah, it's a good watch, you may like it if you like a good bit of an investigative story and some gritty violence.

Rating: ***

Dolittle (PG) - what's it about? Dr Dolittle returns and goes on an adventure to find the fruit of the Eden Tree so he can save the Queen of England.

I'd seen the adverts for this and thought it might go either way, some of these films that they are re-doing are bad and others good. This is a continuation though of the story, not the same beginning re-hashed so that was quite good to see. If you find talking animals amusing and have a silly sense of humour this will be right up your street. It's a typical kids film though, the story isn't too complex but its enough to enjoy, yeah I found it quite amusing and enjoyable.

Transformers: Age of Extinction (DVD – 12) - what's it about? The Autobots are on the run, and a company creates its own Transformers, which doesn't turn out too well.

This one is with a completely different cast, so don't expect to see the re-occurring characters that you saw in all the previous Transformer movies, the only ones that return are the Transformers themselves. So, in a way this is a kind of re-boot movie to the franchise, where the previous story acre had ended, so this is kind of a fresh story but at the same time if you've seen the others it's a carry on in a way. Its filled with what you expect, lots of machines fighting it out and lots of special effects. I'd say it's maybe not as good as the others but it's still an enjoyable watch.

Rating: ****

Riddick (DVD – 15) - what's it about? Riddick is stranded on a planet and must survive bounty hunters and everything there that wants to eat him.

I decided to give this a re-watch as I hadn't seen it since it was released in the cinema, I do love the Riddick series of films, they are pretty good but they are pretty similar in some ways to each other. If you want a good action film with some violence and you appreciate the series then this will be right up your street. With this one though and the way it is done, you don't necessarily need to know the full back story of the character and universe as it does go over a few bits, but of course that always helps with getting the more depth to the plot. Yeah its a good continuation to the story, so I think its worth a look, even though its not the best in the series.
