Movies: 47 Ronin (12A) & The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (PG)

47 Ronin – what’s it about? The Japanese legend of 47 Samurai who were banished and become Ronin, their battle to get revenge for the murder of their master – and their journey to get there… upon the way they meet numerous mystical creatures.

I thought this was really fab – definitely see if you like Japanese myths/legends and if you liked such films as The Last Samurai. It had a good balance of story, fighting and character driven plot…it wasn’t over the top in wire work which can be over used in this type of genre…they have awesome bows too - yeah - see it :)

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – what’s it about? Poor Walter doesn’t have much of a life apart from his work and his sister and mum…with the company he works for closing and him loosing the last negative for their final front cover all seems lost- until Walter sets out on an epic journey.

I really really really thought this film was going to blow but I was actually pleasantly surprised – it was a nice film – kind of one you would watch with your parents…or that you can just sit and watch – it wasn’t dull or boring…check it if you want an easy watching pleasant movie...

Movie: Keeping Mum (DVD - 15)

What's it about? An odd ball family are having a few issues - the father is a vicar, the daughter a sex maniac, the son bullied and the mother has had enough and wants out. Enter the life saver - a lady who has the best interests for the family - pulling out all the stops to help them - oh and she's a serial killer - who takes care of their problems by killing people!

This is a dark-comedy - and is damn amusing - though ok for the entire family...well the adults of the family anyway. It have a good mix of light and dark humour - so if you find death and murder funny then this will probably give you a smile...

Movies: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (12A) & Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (15)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - what's it about? A sequel - it continues the story from where the previous one left off - the adventure as the dwarves try to take back their city from the dragon. Bilbo and the gang continue to meet various folk along their travels - some friend and some foe...

Well...I think I preferred this to the previous one - more stuff happened and the story did get going a lot quicker...probably because it's the sequel - heh - if you enjoyed the first then go and see it - if you're not a fan of fantasy then give it a miss - they're still stretching it out!

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - what's it about? The long awaited sequel to Anchorman - yeah that's all you need to know!

This was damn amusing - had me in stitches and at points - I shed a tear from laughing a tad too much - thankfully though I didn't pee myself. Oh I love Brick lol! It's one that you think during it "what the hell am I watching?!?!?!" If you loved the first one - then go see this - I'd say it's as good as the first - funny - stupid - but the story is pretty predictable in that it's kind of the first repeated...to finish all I'd like to say is - chicken of the cave...

Movies: Dark Skies (DVD – 15) & Doom (DVD – 15)

Dark Skies – what’s it about? A sci-fi horror where a family is haunted by aliens…they have come to make your fears real, torment you and abduct you!

Ok basically this is like a Paranormal Activity movie but with aliens instead of ghosts – but it rocks – awesome spook-factor – just enough – a good story and aliens…so yeah this is great if you love horror and sci-fi stuff! It isn’t one of those over the top special effects movies – it leaves pretty much everything to the imagination – classic horror rather than the modern gore or special effects! Sleep tight and remember they're already here…

Doom – what’s it about? Based on the awesome FPS video game - in this the RRTS are called for a search and destroy mission as a lab on Mars has been quarantined.

I really wanted to play Doom after watching this – a great game movie – lots and lots of action and blood and violence – what’s not to love...oh oh and not forgetting the classic gun cam from the game uuuummmmmm gun cam. If you love a good bit of blood and violence – and loved the games – or don’t have a clue – then this is an epic action movie to see!

Movie: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (DVD – 12)

What’s it about? Based on the books and the first in the trilogy this is – as the title says the unexpected journey of Bilbo – Gandalf and all their dwarf chums as they go to take back their city from the dragon…

Ok so this is the part where I get shot down with arrows of fire – don’t get me wrong I love fantasy stuff and this is alright – but it's basically not as good as Lord of the Rings and is kind of the same all over again – hours of travelling – with the occasional scuffle! Why they had to make this into three movies – it would have been one epic one or maybe two great ones – but three is just dragging it out! I like the characters, the concept, the races – as in all this type of stuff – and the battling and the skirmishes – it’s just kind of one of those ones you have to endure to get to the good bits…

Movie: Lesbian Vampire Killers (DVD - 15)

What's it about? The vampire queen has placed a curse on the village of Cragwich as she's killed...fast forward to present day and all of the villages teenage girls at the age of 18 become lesbian vampires! After another break up with his girlfriend - Jimmy and his best bud decide to take a nice trip to the country - and you can guess the rest...

Well what to say about this movie? I wanted to see this because it's a vampire comedy - it has vampires ok? It is pretty funny in parts but is basically the same crude humour recycled over and over - though it is still amusing to see! If you can find it in the bargain bin or on TV it's worth a watch but any more than that don't bother - unless your a teenage guy - and want to watch women in hot-pants - or unless you still find this humour amusing. Killed a few hours and maybe some braincells but it still made me smile - so yeah...

TV Series: Lost

What’s it about? A plane crashes on an island that is somewhere - in you know its an island so in the sea! It follows the characters and gives you insight into before the plane crashed and what not. It gets a bit sci-fiesc too so gives a little more than expected! It runs for six seasons…

Ok ok I know I’m well late to the party on this one – but you know me I won’t watch something from part way through – and I’m glad I didn’t! This is a great series – the first couple of seasons are epic – the next couple get a bit strange but still good – and the last couple lead it to it’s ending. It’s an enjoyable series and one you can’t stop watching to find out what’s going on…if you haven’t watched then check it out – it’s more than just about a plane crash - but I do wonder why 95% of people on the plane were so good looking?! heh...

Movie: The Sixth Sense (DVD -15)

What’s it about? A young boy is haunted by the ghosts of those who don’t know they are dead – a psychiatrist – is helping him and discovers he’s actually telling the truth and he’s not crazy!

Saw this when it was in the cinema and haven’t seen it since – still as good as I remember! A good supernatural movie that gives some twists – if you like spooky stuff then this is definitely one you need to see - if you haven’t seen it…if you have then maybe go revisit it!

Sunday 1 December 2013

Movies: Carrie (2013) (15) and Saving Mr Banks (PG)

Carrie – what’s it about? A remake of the original Carrie, it is about Carrie White a teenage girl who is bullied by members of her school, as well as being treated harshly by her religious mother…she starts of develop special abilities and stuff happens!

I was really impressed with this re-make, I love the original movie and was a bit dubious to what they would do to it, you know sometimes they are ok and sometimes so bad you nearly cry in shame. They kept in line with the books and the old movie it’s basically just a rehash – they just added modern tech! If you liked the original then you will know what to expect…if you haven’t seen it then check it out!

Saving Mr Banks – what’s it about? The story behind the making of Mary Poppins movie…

This really wasn’t as bad as I expected – it was pretty funny – and emotional…I don’t really know what to say about it – it’s not one you’d take the kids to go see, definitely aimed at the older generation but it's pretty ok just to watch and well watch. Maybe go and see it if you’d like to know a bit about the Poppins movie or if you want to kill a couple of hours…
