Movies: Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (12A), The Imitation Game (12A), 30 Days of Night (DVD – 18) and As Good As It Gets (DVD – 15)

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (12A) – what’s it about? The third movie in the Hunger Games saga, Katniss aids the resistance by becoming the Mockingjay…

Really if you liked the others ones this won’t disappoint – the usual stands though if you don’t like the saga then you know don’t watch it! It was great though to have a story with a lot more to it – more than just the games which are cool of course – but you know with it getting down to more well you know plot. I really don’t want to say too much as you know spoilers – but yeah check it out it’s pretty damn awesome!

The Imitation Game (12A) – what’s it about? Based on a true story – Alan Turing and his team try to crack the Enigma code used by the Nazi’s in World War 2.

Ok well I kinda thought this was going to be really depressing as it was a true story – and you know usually they are depressing (and usually something I don’t like watching) but this was actually really well made and though it touches on some subjects which are very sad – it doesn’t make you come away wanting to jump off a cliff. It was well made – and is worth a look if you’d like to see a problem solving movie…

30 Days of Night (DVD – 18) – what’s it about? A remote town in Alaska is plunged into its annual month of darkness – this time though they face a group of unruly vampires who are taking advantage of the no sunlight!

I really really really really love this film – it’s up there near the top of my list of all time favourite movies J - it has vampires and killing and blood and humans going crazy and really cool well stuff. I really like the way some of this was shot with the white snow covered in blood – it’s so effective! It’s a true vampire film – if you love vampire movies and haven’t see this one then you really really should stop what you’re doing and watch it – it’s so worth it…you wont regret it…well unless you expect some fagpire Twilight junk…then you’ll probably cry and hide behind the couch lol.

As Good As It Gets (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? A writer with OCD who isn’t a very nice guy ends up unexpectedly forming a friendship waitress and a gay artist.

This isn’t usually my type of movie at all – it’s a complete chick flick…you know a curl up on a Sunday afternoon with a blanket and bucket of ice cream and watch something that’s trash. I’m not saying at all this is a bad movie – but you get the picture of what to expect – it’s a romcom but it’s a good one – if that’s actually possible…anyhow I like this movie quite a lot – I’ve watched it a few times and if I’m ever in a “girlie” mood this is one I put on…it’s a nice movie – it’s funny – and sweet – and well a little odd.

Movie: Interstellar (12A)

Interstellar (12A) – what’s it about? The world is failing – life on earth will soon be gone so a small group of explorers head out into the universe to find a new world to call home.

Be prepared this is a long movie – near on 3 hours…but it’s worth it! It’s a little slow to start in the sense of things happening but it sets the story – which is a bloody good one – and as it reaches it’s second half the story unfolds – I can’t say much without spoiling it – but there is definitely one holy crap moment. I’m glad I went to see it – worth it – if you like space drama and story type stuff - check it…but dudes be warned you may need a tissue...

Movies: Nightcrawler (15), Ouija (15), The Book of Life (U) and Ghostbusters (DVD – 12A)

Nightcrawler (15) – what’s it about? Lou – an unemployed thief takes up recording horrific crimes and selling them to a news TV channel to make some money…his ethics are a little hinky but this makes sure he gets the best scoops.

This was a lot darker than I thought it was going to be – I was a little disturbed at points – not because the gore as it was an average 15 but more the immoral actions of Lou – it was pretty messed up but a good movie – though you definitely need to watch something happy afterwards.

Ouija (15) – what’s it about? A girl dies and her friends try to contact her using an Ouija board – they don’t contact her but instead reach the malevolent spirit that’s haunting the house.

I was hoping this was going to be like the old ‘80s Witchboard movies – who remembers those?...and it didn’t disappoint! What was great was it was scary rather than gory and it did have a few good jump moments – though nothing really really really really really scary your pants off. It was pretty damn enjoyable – even though kinda predictable.

The Book of Life (U) – what’s it about? A group of adolescents are on a field trip at a museum where their tour guide tells a tale of three friends and the Mexican Day of the Dead – the story is played out through cartoon figurines – so it’s a story within a story.

This was a really nice story – though touching on some morbid issues – but it was well done and quite uplifting and positive and probably would enforce some positive things about life after death etc. It had some really funny moments  it was a all-round enjoyable movie – but leave your brain at the door. I saw it in 3D and didn’t’ get much of a reaction from it (though I never really do) so I wouldn’t necessarily say watch in 3D rather than 2D.

Ghostbusters (DVD – 12A) – what’s it about? Spooks are on the loose in New York City and the Ghostbusters – a newly formed group of paranormal investigators come ghost trappers are tackling the problem…

They had a 30th anniversary showing in the cinema – and of course I had to go and see it on the big screen. This movie is great – it has humour – story and well everything for a family film…not for tiny tiny people though as it is a bit spooky in parts. If you haven’t seen it and want to watch something fun – or haven’t for a while it’s definitely worth a watch/re-watch…it’s a true classic J
