Movies: Animal Crackers (Netflix – U) & A Quiet Place (DVD – 15)

Animal Crackers (Netflix – U) – I really wasn’t sure what this one was about, I just added it to my list and wanted to watch something easy going, so gave it a bash. It’s about a family who end up inheriting a circus, the uncle tries to find out what the secret is to the magic behind the animals and stops at nothing to try to claim the circus for his own. It’s one of those I think the younger children will love – I could see my nephew who is 10 thinking this is great. It does have a few bits that made me giggle, and the story was alright too. If you want something to relax your brain then this maybe worth a watch but I think three stars maybe being a bit generous but it had enough to keep me entertained and was what I wanted – a nice easy film, just don’t expect anything amazing.

A Quiet Place (DVD – 15) – I decided to give this a re-watch, mainly because where the new one is due out later on in the year and I really couldn’t remember it properly, as I hadn’t seen it since the cinema. If you don’t know the story, it’s a post-apocalyptic story, where some creatures are hunting and killing humans, it follows a families struggle for survival. It doesn’t really give you much back story to where the creatures come from, or what happened that lead to all the events. It’s kind of more just the present situation, and how they have adapted to live and what they must do to survive. I would class this as a horror but it’s not like really scary – kind of mild horror in my book. It is one of those that you can get really engrossed into, well I did anyway. If you are into your horror type stuff and haven’t seen this then it’s worth checking out, or if you haven’t seen it in a while it maybe worth re-watching before the sequel comes out!

The Return to the Movies: 100% Wolf (PG), Unhinged (15) & Dreambuilders (U)

So the cinema started up again here and I gave it a week to find out what it was like and from what I heard it was done pretty safe, so I decided to go on an adventure again. Man I never realised how much I missed the cinema until I was sitting watching movies again on the big screen – after 5 months, that’s crazy, I’ve never since I was a teenager gone that long without going to the cinema!

100% Wolf (PG) – First on the cards was 100% Wolf, it looked quite cool from the synopsis, and I like things like this, kind of easy watching and light-hearted. It's basically about a family of werewolves, and at the age of 13 Freddy is finally going to get to transform into a werewolf for the first time...but nope he turns into a Poodle, and he sets out to prove that he's as good as the members of his pack. It was a good start to the weekend, and it was pretty entertaining and fun to watch. It was a good kids cartoon but wasn’t overly kiddy, and it did make me giggle in a couple of parts so it must have something in it for adults, or well adults with a childish sense of humour anyway. Yep if you have little ones, then this is probably worth having a watch with them, if you’re an adult and like cartoons it’s worth a look too.

Unhinged (15) – The second film of the day was Unhinged, I originally looked at the synopsis for this last week and as soon as I read the first line “award-winning blah blah blah” I completely switched off to it and stopped reading. I thought yeah no way will that be my type of film, award films are usually mind numbing dull. But on re-reading it today it was about Russell Crowe, that he’s an award winning actor, and I really wanted to watch a second film, so I did. This one is about a woman who has an altercation with a guy whilst driving - it starts off as your typical road rage incident really. But he's lost the plot and is completely - as the title says - unhinged. He sets out to ruin her life all because she hooted her horn at him. All I can say is holy fuck this was an awesome film, it’s a really good thriller, like edge of your seat stuff – it made me gasp in quite a few parts, yep there are some moments which are proper omg moments too. Yep if you like a good thriller then I would head straight to your cinema, this is totally worth it in my book...it might also stop some people from being a twat for a while too.

Dreambuilders (U) – this was another one I thought I might as well go and see, I thought it might be overly kiddie but it wasn’t too bad. It’s about a girl whose dad’s new girlfriend and daughter move in, and guess what her new step-sister is a right little brat, after discovering the Dreambuilders – the creatures and little robots that make peoples dreams. She enlists their help to try to make her step-sister a nicer person. So this one does have a story to it and it’s not overly lovely dovey either, I would say though there isn’t much humour or anything in it for adults but there are still some fun and funny moments, it is more aimed at kids. It’s a good watch – maybe three stars is being a little bit generous, but it is still a good little movie the kiddies will love.

Movies: Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (DVD - U), Rim of the World (Netflix - 15), Beyond Skyline (Netflix – 15), A Whisker Away (Netflix – PG), Teen Titans Go! (DVD – PG)

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (DVD - U) – This is a continue on from the Hotel Transylvania movies, it’s the third in the series and this time Mavis takes her dad – Dracula on a much needed holiday. The whole gang head out on a monster cruise ship and as expected nothing is quite what it seems, and there are some dodgy goings on, on the ship behind the scenes. This does very much continue the film series on, so if you have seen the other ones and you like the monster gang then this is totally worth checking out.

Rim of the World (Netflix - 15) – I hadn’t heard of this one but it popped up on my recommended list so I thought I’d give it a watch. It’s about a group of kids who get sent to a summer camp, and basically an astronaut crashes and gives them a memory stick which they have to get it to JPL. I would kind of put this film in the category of films such as the Goonies, its about kids but not necessarily aimed at young kids, but pretty much anyone who was ever a kid will be able to relate to it – but if you were an alien then maybe not so much. It’s pretty amusing but is kind of grown up too, there are some bits that I found really amusing, and it was generally entertaining. If you liked the 90's style kid movies then I’d maybe check this out.

Beyond Skyline (Netflix – 15) – So this is the sequel to that awesome film Skyline that came out years ago and focuses on a group of people trying to survive as aliens attack earth. I really still don’t know if I’ve seen this film or not. To tell you the truth when I put this on I didn’t even watch the trailer or anything, just saw it was sci-fi and flicked it on. After a little bit I paused it as it seemed familiar and looked up to see if it was a sequel, and yep it is. Still to this day though I still don’t know if I’ve seen it before or not, maybe it’s because it’s very similar to the first film. It kind of is just another group of people’s experience of what happened when the aliens attacked, and their story to survive the ordeal. If you liked the first one or if you are a sci-fi nerd then this is worth giving a watch, if you're not really into sci-fi then may be give this a wide birth.

A Whisker Away (Netflix – PG) – I watched the trailer and thought its very Ghibli looking. I used to like those films, and this looked quite cute, and as I’ve started to watch a few anime TV series’ recently I thought I’d give this one a watch. It is as I thought quite a sweet story, but in a way kind of disturbing. It’s about a young girl who has a massive crush on a boy at her school, and she meets this mask seller who gives her a mask that gives her the ability to turn into a cat. She befriends the boy in cat form and the story goes on from there – it’s basically a love story. It was very well made, the characters are quite fun and unique, and the story is quite good too. If you like a nice anime then this is something to spend a couple of hours watching.

Teen Titans Go! (DVD – PG) – I was so happy that I finally got to see this, I missed it at the cinema and was so gutted as I used to love getting home from work and watching the Teen Titans cartoon, so for nostalgia value I wanted to see what they done with this. It was pretty cool in my book, it was done well and I liked the silly things that happened in it, which is classic to the series, the characters and animation were just right too. It was nice for them to finally hit the big screen…in a movie about trying to get a movie lol. I kind of saw what was coming a mile off though, so the story is very predicable. Yeah if you loved Teen Titans, or like superheroes, or cartoons or well all of that then this one is a must see!
