Movies: Dumbo (PG), Shazam! (12A) & Hellboy (2019) (15)

Dumbo (PG) – what’s it about? A remake of the magical story of the baby elephant that has ears so big that he can use them to fly.

I went to see this in hopes that it would be a really good adaptation of the story, and well, without being harsh it’s alright but sadly wasn’t anything special. I think the real little kiddies may like it but as an adult it just didn’t seem magical. I liked some of the characters as they were done well and the story was ok, but to me compared to some of the other amazing kids films that have been release/re-released this just seemed to fall a little flat. I think 3*’s is being too generous, but 2*’s would be too harsh, as its good but just not special.

Shazam! (12A) – what’s it about? Billy ends up becoming a superhero when he is chosen to inherit a wizard’s powers.

I thought this looked amusing from the adverts but thought it could go either way, I have to admit I don’t really know the comics so I’m not sure how accurate it is to them but as a movie it was a good watch. It had some amusing moments, and I think the teenage audience will love this one. I think you’ll either get the humour and lol or you’ll be like wtf am I watching. Yep was just what I needed a good superhero flick with a good bit of action and all that jazz.

Hellboy (2019) (15) – what’s it about? Hellboy tries to stop a powerful witch from causing the apocalypse.

So what to say about this one, well for starters it’s a reboot and not a remake of the previous films. I wasn’t quite sure from the adverts to how this one would be or play out, it just looked a bit off but maybe that’s just me. I don’t know it just didn’t have that oomph, now I wasn’t bored or anything but comparing it to the previous Hellboy films it didn’t meet up to them. I know this one is different, it’s a lot darker and less bright and comical – basically it’s not so kiddy and more believable which is good in some ways. It did though have a good story and action scenes, yeah, it’s a good watch but it sadly doesn’t meet up to some of the other comic book franchises released on the big screen…and the fanboys/girls might have a bit of a meltdown with it.
