Movies: Ghost in the Shell (2017) (12A), Free Fire (15), Fast & Furious 8 (12A), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (12A), Bewitched (DVD – PG), Alien Autopsy (DVD – 12) & Drive (DVD – 18)

Ghost in the Shell (2017) (12A) – what’s it about? A live action version of the anime. Set in near future where humans are modified with technology, the story follows the task force that tracks down criminals and terrorists.

I know people are slating this one and I have to say I’ve seen the anime a few times but that was quite a while ago so keep in mind my opinion is that of a casual viewer and not a franchise nut. I thought this was done really well considering it was a live action version, I didn’t think it was going to mesh so well with the real world or how it would be, they did a good job. I guess our effects technology has gone forward enough to give it a bit of justice. I liked it, it gave some good nods to the original, some of the iconic scenes are still present and it’s pretty well acted with enough action and story to give a good glimpse into the world. Yep I definitely liked it.

Free Fire (15) – what’s it about? Set in the 1970s it is the story of a gun deal going down, it goes wrong and everyone tries to survive.

I didn’t know what to expect at all with this one, I hadn’t really researched into it as sometimes I like a little surprise with movies because if you look them up sometimes you end up with too many spoilers. Well what to say…this was a pretty damn funny movie; I don’t know it’s got a bit of gun violence, bad language and well it’s just funny. It goes back to basics, no big locations or flashy effects (except the guns and blood) so it was refreshing to see. It may not have been what I was expecting as I just thought it was going to be serious, not realising the humour side of it. It’s definitely worth a look just because lol.

Fast & Furious 8 (12A) – what’s it about? Dom’s in retirement and gets pulled into a criminal plot against his will, and the team assemble to take down the anarchist.

Seriously there has been eight of these movies now and I don’t think they have really ever changed – still the same thing: high speed car chases, gun fights, violence and really over the top stunts oh and of course not forgetting everyone being super-hot in really tiny clothing that doesn’t leave much to the imagination. So in short it’s exactly what’s expected and a teenage boys dream come true. If you didn’t like the others there’s no point in seeing this one but if you did then you’ll probably love it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (12A) – what’s it about? The gang is pursued for their criminal endeavours and Peter finds his father.

I couldn’t help but get a seat at the midnight screening of this one, well technically it was a double bill with the first one too just because awesomeness. This one definitely is a great one, it’s extremely funny, I liked the story but I felt it was a little lacking – I don’t know it just didn’t have as much oomph as the first one. It’s again got some really good action scenes and I absolutely love the different characters and races in this, so refreshing to see some good alien races and all different colours under the sun, it’s a very bright universe out there! Anyway yes this is a bloody good movie and if you love the first then you’ll probably love this one too. So why I am I only giving it four stars? I just didn’t feel the story enough – though maybe this could have been because the time that I went to see it.

Bewitched (DVD – PG) – what’s it about? A movie based on the Bewitched TV series being remade.

I remember watching Bewitched re-runs growing up and I liked it a lot. I saw this movie when it first came out so it was nice to re-watch it. This was an interesting take on the series and it was nice that it was a telling of the story rather than trying to re-make the original; a nice refreshing take on the re-boots that happen a lot now-a-days. It has some good story, humour and general feel good moments in it, but in parts it was a bit annoying but then again I think it’s supposed to be – suppose this shows good acting. Yes, well if you liked the TV series then this is worth a little visit.

Alien Autopsy (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? Two guys buy a film using money from a mobster, the film gets damaged and they try to rectify the problem by recreating the movie and palming it off as the real deal.

I’ve watched this one a bit late, when I’d seen it for sale in the past there must have been a reason putting me off it but this time when I picked it up I just thought what the hell. I was actually pleasantly surprised; even though it wasn’t the best film in the universe it did give me a little chuckle in parts, Ant and Dec are basically their usual selves so not much extra acting on their part but it does work really well. I’d say this is worth a look if you are looking for a bit of humour and something to pass the time.

Drive (DVD – 18) – what’s it about? A guy travels to America and is pursued by some mobsters.

I don’t think I’ve seen this since the early 2000s and it’s still a good bit of martial arts mayhem. It’s a little dated now (the astronaut cafĂ© at the end lol best image of the 90s going) but it’s still a good watch. It’s a bit over the top in parts but that’s the way martial art films should be. There’s a bit of a story which is nice and some good humour that gave me a giggle. It’s worth a look if you like some fighting action.
