Movies: In the Heart of the Sea (12A), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (12A), Men in Black 3 (DVD – PG) & Starship Rising (DVD – 15)

In the Heart of the Sea (12A) – what’s it about? The story of Moby Dick…

This was a mystery showing at the cinema so I didn’t know what to expect, I probably would have seen it anyway though. I was a bit omg about the whole whaling thing, it upset me quite a bit and I was definitely rooting for the whales rather than the hoomans in this one. That said though it was an interesting take on the story, the characters were pretty good, parts were pretty eeeeewwww but overall it was a good watch.

Rating: J J J O

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (12A) – what’s it about? The First Order have picked up where the Empire left off and are on a quest for galactic domination.

A lot of people bitched about I, II & III as they weren’t Star Warsie enough and were just generally pile of wank, so I was a bit worried about this one but I have to say I was impressed. It had the same style of IV, V, VI the feeling and the way it was shot was spot on to give it that classic Star Wars feel…and people are now complaining its just the same as them…make your minds up people! Heh. Yes there were a few bits that I thought yep that’s like the same but generally it was a very Star Warsie movie…if you like Star Wars there’s probably no doubt you’ll love this. Ok and I think I managed to do all that without spoilers!

Rating: J J J J O

Men in Black 3 (DVD – PG) – what’s it about? Boris the Animal goes back in time to try to change the future…

Another MIB movie and another barrel of amusing alien humour and general antics, usually after a few films a series starts to get a little weaker, though with MIB (like some others) they manage to keep up the concept and the quality of the film. Yes it has its meh moments and things that have been done a little before but that’s what happens in sequels, though they have managed to keep this pretty fresh, it still has some great moments that’ll make you lol. It’s definitely another fun filled movie!

Rating: J J J O

Starship Rising (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? When a warship capable of destroying a planet is ordered to destroy earth its crew rebel…

There is good sci-fi, there is bad sci-fi then there is good bad sci-fi, sadly this one falls into second category – bad sci-fi. Its concept was interesting and it could have been amazing but sadly the movie just lacked in general so that was lost, it had potential. The space scenes and graphics were ok, it was sadly the BMX, paintball and snorkelling costumes that made it a bit laughable, I could forgive that if the acting and script immersed me in the story and I lost myself in the worlds but sadly that didn’t happen…so much hope, lost, and please don’t get me started on the ending!

Movies: The Good Dinosaur (PG), Sisters (15), Meet the Fockers (DVD – 12A), Real Steel (DVD – 12A), Universal Soldier: The Return (DVD – 18), Sinbad: the fifth voyage (DVD – 12) & Men in Black 2 (DVD – PG)

The Good Dinosaur (PG) – what’s it about? A young dinosaur gets separated from his family and has to find his way home…

This isn’t one of Pizxar’s greatest movies but it’s still good, there isn’t much for adults as it’s very much a kid’s movie, that said though it was a really lovely story, basically like Finding Nemo but with dinosaurs. It’s worth curling up on the couch with your family to watch!

Rating: J J J O

Sisters (15) – what’s it about? Two sisters return to their family home after news their parents have decided to sell it…

Ok I thought this was going to be a big pile of crap, how the hell could they make a movie about this, come on, really! Though…I actually quite enjoyed it, it had its funny moments, even though it’s a girlie film it’s not overly girlie, though it’s probably one you’d watch with your mates, with some wine and ice cream.

Rating: J J J

Meet the Fockers (DVD – 12A) – what’s it about? The sequel to Meet the Parents, with time getting closer to their wedding it’s time for the two sets of parents to meet.

If you liked Meet the Parents then you’ll probably enjoy this one as its all along the same lines, though personally I don’t think its as funny but it’s still got some classic lol moments in it.

Rating: J J J

Real Steel (DVD – 12A) – what’s it about? A boy is reunited with his father and together they enter some robot fighting competitions.

This is a family movie, it’s got a good storyline and action in the way of the robot fights, I actually really enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually had a good storyline which was nice, yeah definitely check it out J

Rating: J J J J

Universal Soldier: The Return (DVD – 18) – what’s it about? The Unisol program is getting shut down and the soldiers aren’t too happy about it.

I kinda had a bit of high hopes for this one, being that Universal Soldier was a good movie but after this I came away feeling meh. I was a little bored to tell you the truth in it, yes the action was good but I don’t know it just felt a little lacking…

Rating: J J O

Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? Sinbad must save the princess from her evil captor.

It was great to see a movie with model monsters rather than everything being super-animated, that said the budget on this one was pretty low but it actually worked really well. It’s kinda one of those B movies that turned out to be pleasantly surprising. If you like your monsters old school and your acting a little interesting then you’ll love this one!

Rating: J J J

Men in Black 2 (DVD – PG) – what’s it about? Jay must get Kay to come back and help him save the planet from destruction.

The sequel to MIB! If you’ve seen it you kinda have an idea of what to expect, aliens, humour, some action and of course a bit of plot. This is another great one that is worth watching or re-watching just for the fun factor, as you can’t beat some alien shenanigans.

Movies: Black Mass (15), Bridge of Spies (12A), Men In Black (MIB) (DVD - PG), Coyote Ugly (DVD - 12) & The Expendables (DVD - 15)

Black Mass (15) – what’s it about? The story of Jimmy Bulger, a gangster, in the US in the 1970s

This was kinda good, a little messed up in places, don’t get me wrong I did enjoy it but it just seemed a little too long. I’m not sure how much of it is truth or just made up to sell the movie, but thankfully it wasn’t overly unnerving like some of these true crime movies are though.

Rating: J J J

Bridge of Spies (12A) – what’s it about? Set at the time of the Cold War both Russia and the US have spies, a Russian spy gets caught and is to be given a fair trial…

I wasn’t too fussed about seeing this from the adverts but it turned out to be a really interesting and good movie. The story was really good, once again though I’m not sure how much was fabricated and how much was real, but it was still enjoyable and entertaining to watch, kept me interested!

Rating: J J J J

Men In Black (MIB) (DVD - PG)– what’s it about? A young NYPD cop finds out that aliens exist and he joins the Men in Black…basically the FBI for aliens…

This movie, got to love it, yeah it’s a little old now but it’s still one of those that makes you chuckle and smile no matter how many times you watch it, ok that might just be me but yeah it’s a good fun family movie!

Rating: J J J J O

Coyote Ugly (DVD - 12) – what’s it about? A young musician moves to the city where she tries to get a record deal and ends up working at an interesting bar.

This is a girlie movie, so you know what to expect its going to have its romance and what not, but still so as a girlie movie this is a good watch, it’s a feel good movie that will make you be like ah sweet without you wanting to barf.

Rating: J J J O

The Expendables (DVD - 15) – what’s it about? A team that carry out some questionable missions…

Action movie, guns, explosions and all that jazz, you know the drill, it’s got a basic story with lots of mayhem going on. This is a good one though, keeps you entertained and is amusing in parts too.

Rating: J J J J

Movies: Spectre (12A), The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 (12A), Zombieland (DVD – 15) & Beowulf (DVD – 12A)

Spectre (12A) – what’s it about? With the 00 program being closed down, Bond must uncover the truth of the cryptic message he receives from the grave…

If you know James Bond you kinda know exactly what to expect with this one, car chases, gun fights, explosions and Bond getting it on with at least one pretty woman…so you know the drill. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but all so predictable and been done before.

Rating: J J J O

The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 (12A) – what’s it about? A continuation on from Mockingjay Part 1 this one wraps up the Hunger games series :’(

It’s been a long road which has sadly come to an end with this finale. After being a little disappointed by P1 this one definitely makes up for it, P1 just being a lead into this movie, though I really recommend watching them one after the other as it gives it a massive boost to the atmosphere and story. It is once again, filled with a good mix of the action and story, but be prepared to take your tissues as you may need them!

Rating: J J J J O

Zombieland (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? A young college kid travelling across Zombie infested America who teams up with a gun-totting Twinkie hunting Texan!

Zombies, comedy, zombies, killing, more zombies, yep yet another zombie comedy but this is pretty damn amusing in parts, it definitely has its moments. If you like the whole zombie apocalypse deal and
you like it with a bit of a random streak then this one will be right up your alley.

Rating: J J J O

Beowulf (DVD – 12A) – what’s it about? The story of Beowulf, a hero who sets out to defeat Grendel, a monster, who’s tormenting a village.

This is one of those movies that’s great but a little weird at the same time, I think its probably the animation of it that makes it a little weird, don’t get me wrong though I do like animated stuff but I think if this was live action it would give it a little more depth. It’s a good story though that unfolds throughout, so it’s definitely worth a look especially if you like Vikings and mythology and stuff!

Rating: J J J O

Monday 9 November 2015

Movies: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (15) & Dark Universe (DVD – 15)

Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse (15) – what’s it about? A group of Scouts are camping out; they return to town to find there’s been a virus outbreak…a zombie virus outbreak…

I expected this to be pretty bad but it was actually bloody good and funny in parts too, not the best movie ever but way better than those zombie horrible romance films that came out *shudders*…anyway teenage boys, zombies, weed whackers and the will for survival, yeah it was a laugh, it me lol and go ewww too, worth a look if you have a bit of a dark sense of humour.

Rating: J J J O

Dark Universe (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? Loki tries to take over the world and Thor must stop him…

This is a B movie; don’t get me wrong some B movies are amazing but this was kinda meh. It’s based on the Norse gods…and there’s some of it that screams rip off of other movies heh. Apart from that the film would have been alright if it wasn’t for the really really really annoying actress they had to play the main female lead…at points I wanted to jump out a window and run away screaming flailing my arms in the air. Anyway, yeah it was ok to pass the time but that was sadly all.

Movies: The Last Witch Hunter (12A) & Hitman (DVD - 15)

The Last Witch Hunter (12A) – what’s it about? Cursed with eternal life, Kaulder helps uphold the treaty between witches and man…

This was way better than I thought it was going to be, yeah it looks good from the trailers but it’s better than that! The story was pretty cool, it actually had a bit of a plot unlike some actiony type movies, it also had a great lot of action and supernaturalness thrown in to boot! It’s definitely worth checking out J

Rating: J J J J

Hitman (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? Agent 47 finds himself being pursued by Interpol after a hit doesn’t go so according to plan…

This is bloody good, if you like the Hitman games…or just know something about them you’ll probably enjoy this, it’s a great action movie that does good for the franchise rather than some of those game movies that completely suck balls. So yeah if you like action movies with some story thrown in for good measure this is definitely worth checking out!

Movie: Crimson Peak (15)

Crimson Peak (15) – what’s it about? Edith moves in with her new husband and his sister to their old mansion in the middle of nowhere, everything’s not as it seems and things go bump in the night.

I wouldn’t say this was scary scary; it’s a little spooky and more icky in parts. The story though is really great, though we figured the story out quite early on it was still fab even if a tad predictable, that said it’s so worth watching if you like horror stories.

Rating: J J J J

Movies: Pan (PG), Sicario (15) & Debug (15)

Pan (PG) – what’s it about? Peter ends up being taken from the orphanage to the world of Neverland where he must prove he is the Pan.

This is the beginning of the story of how Peter became Peter Pan rather than the later story as you know it with him meeting Wendy and fighting Capt Hook. So this is more of an opening movie, a place setter for future movies, and these are usually a little meh in parts. This is good though, enjoyable, it was interesting to see a little more of Neverland too and a few bits of information about Peter thrown in. It’s worth watching if you like the Peter Pan stories…though nothing will ever beat Hook!

Rating: J J J O

Sicario (15) – what’s it about? An FBI agent joins a special task force to tackle the war on drugs.

This is a pretty messed up, it’s all about Mexican cartels and drugs being smuggled into the US and the US taking a stand against it, bending and breaking the rules to get results…so with that said you can imagine that its pretty dark in parts. It’s worth seeing if you like crime and cop stuff.

Rating: J J J J

Debug (15) – what’s it about? Six hacker prisoners are sent to clear up the tech on a derelict spaceship…

I got this thinking yeah sounds interesting, when I turned it on to my surprise it was Directed by David Hewlett and starred Jason Momoa (if you know Stargate Atlantis you’ll know these are both stars from the show) so I was like OMG!. This was a lot more sane than “A Dogs Breakfast” which Hewlett also directed. It was an interesting movie, it’s kinda a sci-fi horror, it’s pretty low budget…more of a B movie, but it’s still good especially when you think about it afterwards.

Rating: J J J

Tuesday 6 October 2015

Movies: The Martian (12A) & Lord of War (DVD – 15)

The Martian (12A) – what’s it about? Mark an astronaut ends up stranded on Mars and he has to survive against all odds!

This was pretty good – and yes I managed to put “Matt Damannn” out my head for most of this movie – damn Team America! Anyway yeah it was a good survival story – but don’t worry the whole movie isn’t just Mark alone prancing around on a planet, it focuses on the rescue mission too. It has its funny moments and very serious ones too; it’s definitely worth a watch.

Rating: J J J O

Lord of War (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? An arms dealer – do I need to say anymore than this...probably not!

Guns, guns, guns and more guns! Who wants guns? This movie is a lot of Yuri telling the story of his life, what went on and him trying to justify the morality of his work…whilst being pursued by Interpol. It’s good though, an enjoyable watch but a little disturbing at the same time!

Rating: J J J

Monday 28 September 2015

Movies: Solace (15), Elektra (DVD – 12) & Kingdom of Heaven (DVD – 15)

Solace (15) – what’s it about? A psychic teams up with the FBI to catch a serial killer…

I can’t really say much without spoiling it, but this is an interesting one, if you like crime and serial killer type stuff then you’ll probably enjoy this, with the dash of the supernatural thrown in, in the form of psychic powers it gives it a little more bite than your average crime movie.

Rating: J J J

Elektra (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? Elektra is an assassin for hire, she chooses to protect her targets from The Hand rather than kill them…

It’s a bit of a girly super flick really, it’s alright but a little meh, yeah it kept me entertained but I found myself a little bored by the storyline and some of the scenes, just seemed a lot of poncing about really.

Rating: J J O

Kingdom of Heaven (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? In the 12th century, Balian travels to Jerusalem and becomes the cities defender when it’s attacked…

This one’s obviously about religion if you hadn’t guessed from the name of it, it’s very cool with its fighting and killing and in depth plot, it’s nice to see a film with a mixture of story as well as action, this one fills both cups!

Rating: J J J J

Monday 21 September 2015

Movies: The Visit (15), Everest (12) & Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (DVD – 12)

The Visit (15) – what’s it about? Two children go and stay with their grandparents for a week and things are a little weird…ok I raise that…to crazy.

This is a horror…supposedly…ok there were a couple of bits that made me jump but mainly this is funny as hell. It’s all from the kids perspective and them making a movie and their crazy old grandparents and how they are scary in the kids eyes.

Rating: J J J

Everest (12) – what’s it about? The true story of an expedition to Everest that goes horribly wrong…

This movie was interesting, though I’m not sure how much is real and how much is dramatised being that it’s unknown. Yes I know it is a true account and if it is completely accurate I am kinda in disbelief how it went down. I understand a lot was out of their control but seriously I don’t know why anyone would want to climb a mountain like that. It’s a touching movie, filled with intense moments and some very sad ones…have your tissues at the ready.

Rating: J J J J

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? Lara Croft must battle against villains and get the artefact before them so she can stop their evil plans.

Wow Lara has an immense wardrobe in this movie…apart from her amount of wardrobe changes it’s a good movie focusing mainly on her boobs and butt j/k…seriously though this is a good one, it’s got some good action scenes and moments like the games which are really cool!

Rating: J J J
