Movies: Nightcrawler (15), Ouija (15), The Book of Life (U) and Ghostbusters (DVD – 12A)

Nightcrawler (15) – what’s it about? Lou – an unemployed thief takes up recording horrific crimes and selling them to a news TV channel to make some money…his ethics are a little hinky but this makes sure he gets the best scoops.

This was a lot darker than I thought it was going to be – I was a little disturbed at points – not because the gore as it was an average 15 but more the immoral actions of Lou – it was pretty messed up but a good movie – though you definitely need to watch something happy afterwards.

Ouija (15) – what’s it about? A girl dies and her friends try to contact her using an Ouija board – they don’t contact her but instead reach the malevolent spirit that’s haunting the house.

I was hoping this was going to be like the old ‘80s Witchboard movies – who remembers those?...and it didn’t disappoint! What was great was it was scary rather than gory and it did have a few good jump moments – though nothing really really really really really scary your pants off. It was pretty damn enjoyable – even though kinda predictable.

The Book of Life (U) – what’s it about? A group of adolescents are on a field trip at a museum where their tour guide tells a tale of three friends and the Mexican Day of the Dead – the story is played out through cartoon figurines – so it’s a story within a story.

This was a really nice story – though touching on some morbid issues – but it was well done and quite uplifting and positive and probably would enforce some positive things about life after death etc. It had some really funny moments  it was a all-round enjoyable movie – but leave your brain at the door. I saw it in 3D and didn’t’ get much of a reaction from it (though I never really do) so I wouldn’t necessarily say watch in 3D rather than 2D.

Ghostbusters (DVD – 12A) – what’s it about? Spooks are on the loose in New York City and the Ghostbusters – a newly formed group of paranormal investigators come ghost trappers are tackling the problem…

They had a 30th anniversary showing in the cinema – and of course I had to go and see it on the big screen. This movie is great – it has humour – story and well everything for a family film…not for tiny tiny people though as it is a bit spooky in parts. If you haven’t seen it and want to watch something fun – or haven’t for a while it’s definitely worth a watch/re-watch…it’s a true classic J
