Movies: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (PG), Dumb and Dumber To (15), & Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (DVD 15)

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (PG) – what’s it about? The third movie in the Night at the Museum series – the tablet that makes the exhibits of the museum come to life at night is failing – can Larry and co find out why and fix the problem…

This is pretty damn funny – if you like the other ones you’ll probably like this as it’s in the same style – stupid humour and comical stuff…pretty good all round – and they come to England this time – yay!

Rating: J J J O

Dumb and Dumber To (15) – what’s it about? Lloyd and Harry return 20 years on and go in search of Harry’s daughter who was given up for adoption…

Seriously WTF – WTF did I just watch? I just wasted that two hours and am never going to get it back. At points this movie nearly drove me to tears and that’s not cuz of laughter. FFS I had my head in my hands thinking someone please shoot me – maybe it was cuz I watched it after a good comedy so it made it look even worse – but I’ll never be watching it again to find out! This was probably the worst movie I’ve seen in like at least two years – it has truly made my top five worst movies list…ugh.

Rating: J

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (DVD 15) – what’s it about? Abraham Lincoln the President of America tries to stop the vampires that are trying to take over the country.

This is pretty cool – it’s based on the book and is kinda an amusing concept – when I saw this in the cinema I thought it was really going to suck – and not in a cool vampire way. That said I’ve watched it a few times now and it’s still good, good story, characters, acting and action really – lots of fights and stuff…and of course  vampires! Woohoo! Abraham Lincoln kicks ass!

Movies: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (12A), Skyline (DVD - 15) & Legion (DVD - 15)

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (12A) – what’s it about? After Smaug was removed from his keep – Bilbo and his chums must battle against the onslaught of armies all seeking their claim on the gold and the throne.

Hmmm now I’m probably going to get shot down :P  but the first two movies were pretty lame and slow – this one however nearly makes up for how dull those movies were (yes the second one wasn’t as bad but the first was like OMG dying). This has everything you want though – the story continues, the fantasy battles – yeah it’s good and is so worth watching!

Rating: J J J J

Skyline (DVD - 15) – what’s it about? Humans are living it up and aliens invade – can they survive the ordeal…

Basically aliens come down and engage the human vacuum device and suck people up into their ships…this is the people sucking movie. Ok this is not about the army or fighting back against the invaders – but a story of average people surviving an alien attack – by average people I mean some swanky folk living in a penthouse apartment and the like – so it’s not about the bloke living next door. It is a good movie – if you like survival stuff – aliens and sci-finess…

Rating: J J J J

Legion (DVD - 15) – what’s it about? A group of people randomly meet in a cafĂ© – and angels fall from grace and set out to destroy humanity…who try to survive the ordeal.

This is pretty cool – it doesn’t really give you much of a story or base of why things are happening but it is great for what it is – a survival movie. If you watch this and like it or have seen Dominion – then this is where it all comes from! Check it!

Movies: Penguins of Madagascar (U), Paddington (PG), Horrible Bosses 2 (15), War of the Worlds ((2005) DVD 12A) and Night at the Museum (DVD PG)

Penguins of Madagascar (U) – what’s it about? The story of the Penguins from the Madagascar movies – and how they try to stop the evil doctor from harming all penguins.

This was pretty funny – I liked the Madagascar movies a lot – they were pretty amusing and cute and funny for adults and kids. This is similar to those movies in that it’s the same graphics, humour and characters etc – so you get the drill…if you like them it’s worth looking at – if not then maybe not.

Rating: J J J O

Paddington (PG) – what’s it about? The bear called Paddington travels to London where he’s taken in by a loving family…you know the story so I’m not even going to bother…

This was a little disappointing – I kinda had no hopes for it so I don’t know how I can say it was disappointing :P – I think maybe if you are a kid this’ll be more enjoyable – but yeah there were only a couple of bits that made me heh but nothing LoL funny.

Rating: J J O

Horrible Bosses 2 (15) – what’s it about? A continuation from the Horrible Bosses movie – the gang decide to start up their own business – and they end up in criminal activities again.

This was ok – thought it was going to be really bad from the adverts but was kinda surprised…it wasn’t as good as the first one but still ok. There was one scene that set be off in a fit of giggles which made it worth it.

Rating: J J J O

War of the Worlds (DVD 12A) – what’s it about? The alien machines rise from the bowls of the earth and they begin to wipe out humanity

Even though a lot of people slate this one – I enjoyed it – it’s pretty good and Tom Cruise is ok in it. Yeah I liked it – so you might or you might not depending on your views but yeah – aliens – human destruction and survival – what more do you need?

Rating: J J J J

Night at the Museum (DVD PG) – what’s it about? An unemployed guy takes on a job as a night guard at the natural history museum and discovers its displays come to life at night.

This is good – humour for both adults and children – stupidly funny and all round family enjoyment…not much really to say apart from if you don’t laugh then get a sense of humour – enjoyable and worth it!

Movies: Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (12A), The Imitation Game (12A), 30 Days of Night (DVD – 18) and As Good As It Gets (DVD – 15)

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (12A) – what’s it about? The third movie in the Hunger Games saga, Katniss aids the resistance by becoming the Mockingjay…

Really if you liked the others ones this won’t disappoint – the usual stands though if you don’t like the saga then you know don’t watch it! It was great though to have a story with a lot more to it – more than just the games which are cool of course – but you know with it getting down to more well you know plot. I really don’t want to say too much as you know spoilers – but yeah check it out it’s pretty damn awesome!

Rating:J J J J O

The Imitation Game (12A) – what’s it about? Based on a true story – Alan Turing and his team try to crack the Enigma code used by the Nazi’s in World War 2.

Ok well I kinda thought this was going to be really depressing as it was a true story – and you know usually they are depressing (and usually something I don’t like watching) but this was actually really well made and though it touches on some subjects which are very sad – it doesn’t make you come away wanting to jump off a cliff. It was well made – and is worth a look if you’d like to see a problem solving movie…

Rating: J J J O

30 Days of Night (DVD – 18) – what’s it about? A remote town in Alaska is plunged into its annual month of darkness – this time though they face a group of unruly vampires who are taking advantage of the no sunlight!

I really really really really love this film – it’s up there near the top of my list of all time favourite movies J - it has vampires and killing and blood and humans going crazy and really cool well stuff. I really like the way some of this was shot with the white snow covered in blood – it’s so effective! It’s a true vampire film – if you love vampire movies and haven’t see this one then you really really should stop what you’re doing and watch it – it’s so worth it…you wont regret it…well unless you expect some fagpire Twilight junk…then you’ll probably cry and hide behind the couch lol.

Rating: J J J J J

As Good As It Gets (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? A writer with OCD who isn’t a very nice guy ends up unexpectedly forming a friendship waitress and a gay artist.

This isn’t usually my type of movie at all – it’s a complete chick flick…you know a curl up on a Sunday afternoon with a blanket and bucket of ice cream and watch something that’s trash. I’m not saying at all this is a bad movie – but you get the picture of what to expect – it’s a romcom but it’s a good one – if that’s actually possible…anyhow I like this movie quite a lot – I’ve watched it a few times and if I’m ever in a “girlie” mood this is one I put on…it’s a nice movie – it’s funny – and sweet – and well a little odd.

Movie: Interstellar (12A)

Interstellar (12A) – what’s it about? The world is failing – life on earth will soon be gone so a small group of explorers head out into the universe to find a new world to call home.

Be prepared this is a long movie – near on 3 hours…but it’s worth it! It’s a little slow to start in the sense of things happening but it sets the story – which is a bloody good one – and as it reaches it’s second half the story unfolds – I can’t say much without spoiling it – but there is definitely one holy crap moment. I’m glad I went to see it – worth it – if you like space drama and story type stuff - check it…but dudes be warned you may need a tissue...

Movies: Nightcrawler (15), Ouija (15), The Book of Life (U) and Ghostbusters (DVD – 12A)

Nightcrawler (15) – what’s it about? Lou – an unemployed thief takes up recording horrific crimes and selling them to a news TV channel to make some money…his ethics are a little hinky but this makes sure he gets the best scoops.

This was a lot darker than I thought it was going to be – I was a little disturbed at points – not because the gore as it was an average 15 but more the immoral actions of Lou – it was pretty messed up but a good movie – though you definitely need to watch something happy afterwards.

Rating: J J J O

Ouija (15) – what’s it about? A girl dies and her friends try to contact her using an Ouija board – they don’t contact her but instead reach the malevolent spirit that’s haunting the house.

I was hoping this was going to be like the old ‘80s Witchboard movies – who remembers those?...and it didn’t disappoint! What was great was it was scary rather than gory and it did have a few good jump moments – though nothing really really really really really scary your pants off. It was pretty damn enjoyable – even though kinda predictable.

Rating: J J J O

The Book of Life (U) – what’s it about? A group of adolescents are on a field trip at a museum where their tour guide tells a tale of three friends and the Mexican Day of the Dead – the story is played out through cartoon figurines – so it’s a story within a story.

This was a really nice story – though touching on some morbid issues – but it was well done and quite uplifting and positive and probably would enforce some positive things about life after death etc. It had some really funny moments  it was a all-round enjoyable movie – but leave your brain at the door. I saw it in 3D and didn’t’ get much of a reaction from it (though I never really do) so I wouldn’t necessarily say watch in 3D rather than 2D.

Rating: J J J O

Ghostbusters (DVD – 12A) – what’s it about? Spooks are on the loose in New York City and the Ghostbusters – a newly formed group of paranormal investigators come ghost trappers are tackling the problem…

They had a 30th anniversary showing in the cinema – and of course I had to go and see it on the big screen. This movie is great – it has humour – story and well everything for a family film…not for tiny tiny people though as it is a bit spooky in parts. If you haven’t seen it and want to watch something fun – or haven’t for a while it’s definitely worth a watch/re-watch…it’s a true classic J

Movie: The Judge (15)

The Judge (15) – what’s it about: Hank a city lawyer returns to his small home town where his father the Judge is accused of murder...

I really didn’t have a clue what this movie was about when I went to see it apart from I was told it was a drama which automatically made me think oh god no – but I was actually surprised by this one. It had a good story – it had some really funny moments but also some really sad ones – the actors and story made me really feel for them…I even got a lump in my throat at points – omg wimp much lol – but be warned it is quite depressing. Anyway if you like drama things it’s probably worth a look – but if you however prefer your movies to be more fantasy than reality probably don’t bother.

Movies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (12A), The Maze Runner (12A), Annabelle (15), Cemetery Junction (15 – DVD) & Predators (15 – DVD)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (12A) – what’s it about? TMNT early adventures above ground – can they stop the evil Shredder from causing disaster and save the city…and April?...

Teenage mutant ninja turtles – heroes in a half shell – turtle power! *cough*. If you hadn’t guessed I loved the Turtles as a kid – they were well cool…and this movie does it some good justice. The characters have similar personalities that shine through from the old school days. They might look a little weird but it kinda works with the movie – yes I would have liked them to look more like their original selves but I can see why they changed them with this day and age of more believable looking heroes. But yeah anyway – good movie – it’s well timed and doesn’t drag – gives you enough action and story – and not forgetting reach-backs to the old days to keep us old fans happy – but as well as keeping it fresh for the new generation. Anyway – if you were a fan or new to it then definitely check it out – Turtle power!

Rating: J J J J

The Maze Runner (12A) – what’s it about? Teenagers are sent to the surface and the only way to find their way out is through the maze – can they survive the scary creatures that venture out at night – and figure out who has done this to them at the same time…

This was good – but hmmm how to say this was a little slow – the timing was a little off the first half dragged and the second half went to quick. When it got going it – it was a really good movie – the story was ok and the characters were alright – it was enjoyable but probably more a teen movie.

Rating: J J J

Annabelle (15) – what’s it about? Two occultists are killed and the doll one of them held when she died becomes haunted and begins to harm the family who’s home it’s in – can they save their child and stop the evil spook?…

I hate dolls! I really hate dolls! – But thankfully this wasn’t as freaky and disturbing as I thought it was going to be. It was good though – good story and jumpy spookiness – gave a few scares and was good to see the origins of Annabelle. If you liked The Conjuring then check it out – if you haven’t seen it though you can still watch this one if you like spooky ghostly type stuff.

Rating: J J J

Cemetery Junction (15 – DVD) – what’s it about? It’s a comedy set in the 1970’s which follows the story of a group of working class friends…

Well…well…well…I use the term “comedy” in the description very loosely…I laughed like twice through this one. It was bland – depressing – and just lacked all-round…kinda expected a lot more from a Ricky Gervais movie…it was alright but was pretty boring really…some people may find it good…but me not so much...

Rating: J O

Predators (15 – DVD) – what’s it about? A group of killers, military and all out scary people are dumped on a planet and are hunted by Predators – can they survive the ordeal and find away off the rock?....

Needs more Predators! It was a good one – the story and action was good – and gave you what you need in this type of movie – action – guns – killing and all that jazz…it’s pretty damn good but maybe just a smidgen not as good as some of the other ones – but still up there as a great movie! Definitely watch if you love Predator – you’ll no doubt love it. Predators rule!!!!!

Movies: Dracula Untold (15), Gone Girl (18), The Equalizer (15) & Super (DVD – 18)

Dracula Untold – what’s it about? The Turks attack Vlad Tepe’s empire and he seeks supernatural forces to help him protect his home and its people…

OMFG this movie – OMG!!!!!! *faints* it’s the best movie I’ve seen in agggeeeeessss J and I mean aaaaaaggggggeeeesssss…but I am a bit of a vampire fiend but this is so what was needed – none of that lame-ass-poofy-fagpire stuff! I walked out the doors of the cinema and would have been happy to walk back into the next showing of it! It had story – good acting – fighting – all-round vampire win! If you love vampire movies then you need to stop what you’re doing and see it now! Do it – DO IT – DO IT!!!!!

Rating: J J J J J

Gone Girl – what’s it about? A wife goes missing and the husband and his family get caught up in the investigation and media frenzy as they try to find out what’s happened to her…

This was a pretty clever movie – I can’t really say much without spoiling it as it’s one of those mystery things…it’s worth watching as it’s well done – but is one of those you’d only really watch it once. Good acting – story and characters…but even though it is well done – it is still a bit long and meh in places…

Rating: J J J O

The Equalizer – what’s it about? A man who lives a quiet life – decides to awaken his secret past and take action against the criminals of the city…

What can I say about this one? Well…it was good J I liked it! It had a good storyline – and a good mix of action with it. It was enjoyable…though the first half was a little slow and meh but it set the scene so alls forgiven as it works. It had a good vibe of people doing right against those doing wrong! He’s an EPIC guy – would like to know more about his story – there wasn’t much history given in this one – kinda all about the now…I’d really like to learn some of his talents…could come in handy…

Rating: J J J J

Super (DVD) – what’s it about? A normal guy stands up to become a superhero and tackle the drug dealers who have influenced his girlfriend…well ex-girlfriend…

People compare this one to Kick Ass…don’t – don’t do it – it’s not the same and should not be compared – if you watch it thinking it’s going to be that movie then you’ll be really really disappointed. If you watch it for what it is – then you might be presently surprised. Ok it’s weird and don’t get me wrong it has its funny moments but it is harsh – and deals with some real issues but some in slightly comical ways. When watching it you might think wtf but by the end you’ll be happy you watched it…well probably.

Fandom: EGX (Euro Gamer Expo) – 26 & 27 Sep 2014

From the outside...Earls Court

At the weekend I got to attend the Euro Gamer Expo (now known as EGX) at Earls Court in London – what to say about this event????...

I got to hang out with some amazing Legacy of Kain/Nosgoth people :D – oh you all know who you are – who were super! I got to play a fair few games...including queuing 30 mins to play Nosgoth – man the wait was longer than the wait in a Lobby back in Alpha lol

View from upstairs

Anyway onto the show – I managed to attend both the Friday and Saturday. The atmopshere was great – the people and design – layout and well just the whole thing was pretty awesome and what you’d kind of expect from a convention if you’ve not been – loud noises – cheering – matches on big screens – stalls – games – games and more games...oh and not expecting overly priced food and drink – but it’s Earls Court so you know what to expect.

Cosplay stage

The only thing I was hoping for and was a little disappointed about was the amount of cosplayers – yes there were a few and the quality was great but there weren't as many as I thought there would be...well compared to MCM Comic Con there weren't many...but I suppose they've only had cosplay there for a couple of years so it takes a while to get going. They did though however have a cosplay stage – and stuff there going on...such as the masquerade, games, panels/guidance etc which was cool.

Winners of the cosplay masquerade (Friday)

The Friday was the less busy of the two days at the convention but it was still pretty manic – the queue to get in the doors was pretty huge but they managed to get people in pretty quick which was damn good...if it would have been raining it would have sucked. The queue time for games though wasn’t as long on the Friday as the Saturday but average waiting time for games was around 30 mins or so – so it was a lot of standing about but it could have been way worse.

There was a little free evening event at a local pub which was kinda cool to – it was free and you got a free drink (I luv free stuff!) and could take part in a gaming quiz...it was great to hang out with some people from the day and generally geek out about games and stuff...I’d recommend popping down if they do one next year – it’s not a banging party (like the Sony one) but a nice chilled out pub gathering.

Great cosplay

Anyway back to games...I don’t think I can remember all the games I went and played – but I'll try to name some: Alien Isolation, Nosgoth, Mortal Kombat X, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Lego Batman, Bayonetta 2, Lords of the Fallen, Super Smash Bros (for WiiU), Hyrule Warriors...yeah that's all I can remember right now – and they were all great in there own ways!

My three top highly anticipated games are:

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris
Bayonetta 2
Mortal Kombat X

...wait Lucinvampire – why isn’t Nosgoth listed in the top three games???? Surely that’s just rude! Heh I’m only not adding it because you all know it’d bump something else out of place – that it’s great – and how much I love it – so thought I’d better be fair and give chance to some other games for once.

Prophet and Alchemist @ Nosgoth

Well in round up – overall it was a great convention – with great people – games and overall awesomeness :D I’d highly recommend visiting it if you haven’t so far...the price is bargain to get in – and if you like games you’ll LOVE it :D

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Movies: Pineapple Express (DVD – 15), Cuban Fury (DVD – 15), Predator (DVD – 18), Predator 2 (DVD – 18), Alien Vs Predator (AvP) (DVD – 15) & Alien Vs Predator Requiem (AvPR) (DVD –15)

Pineapple Express (15) – what’s it about? A process server and a drug dealer go on the run from hitmen and police after witnessing a murder…

Hmmm…I have to admit this is one of the better comedies I’ve seen in a while – lots of really stupid moments – and it kinda reminded me of Jay and Silent Bob a tad – so you know it’s good for a little bit of a chuckle…

Rating: J J J

Cuban Fury (15) – what’s it about? As a child Bruce was an award winning Salsa champion – with it all given up he becomes a under confident man…a woman lights the fire in his heels and he takes up the dance again to win her heart!

When this came out in the cinema I was like “no! no! no way am I seeing this! It’s going to be the biggest pile of turd going! I’m never watching it ever!” and well umm I think I have to eat my hat on this one…I was pleasantly surprised – it is definitely a chick flick – don’t get me wrong on that at all what-so-ever – but it has its laughs – its smiles – sadness and good moments…I’m not into dancing – romance or girly stuff – and you know I enjoyed it – yes it’s not amazing but yeah kinda maybe worth giving it a go…maybe…

Rating: J J J O

Predator (18) – what’s it about? A team of Special Forces are sent to the jungle to find a missing diplomatic party – they are met by an unexpected surprise in the form of an alien…the Predator!

Dude I love this movie – so much do I love this movie – it’s a complete classic! Though I still can’t believe it was released in 1987! It has action – corny one liners and aliens what more do you want? If you’ve never seen this I don’t know where you’ve been – but watch it man or re-watch it if you like Arnie movies with a dash of cool ass aliens thrown in! Predators rule!

The question is – are you an Alien or Predator supporter?

Rating: J J J J O

Predator 2 (18) – what’s it about? The city of LA is under siege by drug gangs – a battle ensues between police and the gangs – throw in a Predator who has chosen LA as his hunting ground and well that’s this movie…

This is a good one – not with Arnie this time – but still a great sequel – voodoo gangs – guns – police – explosions and Predator – there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing this cool dude killing in some awesome ways…”want some candy?” J

Rating: J J J J

Alien Vs Predator (AvP) (15) – what’s it about? The year is 2004 and Weyland industries picks up a heat signature in the Artic...they go to investigate and discover something they weren’t expecting…extra-terrestrials battling it out on earth…

Holy crap Lucin you’ve been watching a lot of Predator/Alien sh*t recently – talk about wtf! Well I blame work lol…anyway onto this movie – it’s great – it has Aliens and Predators battling it out – action and people dying – love it man – love it big time – if you love the Alien/Predator movies/comics then you’ll probably die with how awesome this is…it has some great scenes…love it…though I’m not giving it 5* - why? Because it ended lol

Rating: J J J J O

Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (AvPR) (15) – what’s it about? After the end of AvP – Predators return to earth to destroy an Alien invasion…

I like this movie – it’s maybe not as good as AvP – I’m not sure but I think there’s too much stuff with humans and not enough with the Predators/Aliens lol but it’s still pretty cool J - it has Aliens and Predators and killing and explosions and guns and yeah – you get the drill – if you like the other movies you know what to expect…all good in the hood!

Rating: J J J J
